Isopsephy (ἰσοψηφία: meaning literally, “equal pebbled” or “equal count”) is the technique of (1) calculating the numerical value of Greek words by adding the values of each letter, and (2) correlating words with the same numerical value. It is generally considered identical to the parallel practice of Gematria, which uses the Hebrew language. Terms that share the same numerical value are viewed by the practitioner of isopsephy to be significant in some way. Isopsephy can be viewed as an exegetical tool, a method of divination, and a theurgic technique.
